Five years ago we went to Smolak Farms to go apple picking. This year we went to Smolak Farms again. I really like going apple picking because it’s a nice way to start off the school year and the Fall season, when the weather is getting colder. At Smolak Farms they grow a few different types of apples, the variety they have are: Macintosh, Cortland, Granny Smith and Honey Crisp. While Honey Crisp apples are the best for eating as a snack, Granny Smith are the best for cooking since they are a bit sour but when baked with sugar and other ingredients they are just the right tartness.

This year we made apple ginger jam, apple crisp and we left some to eat as a snack.

Since it’s been five years since we went apple picking, we made four apple crisps to make up for the years that we didn’t go.

I like to eat apple crisp for breakfast or as a snack when I come back from school. I always have a scoop of vanilla ice cream with my slice. The apple ginger jam was really tasty. I like to spread it on bread and have it as a snack. We added a little orange zest which added a nice texture to the jam and good flavor. Since the jam was made out of apple it almost tasted like apple sauce with a hint of spice from the ginger.
